If you are going on a family holiday to Monmouth, then there are plenty of fun activities to take part in or around Monmouth that are also suitable for kids.
Wye Valley Butterfly Zoo
Ross-on-Wye, Free entrance
Take a walk through an indoor hothouse and watch the tropical butterflies flying around, sipping on nectar. The zoo also focuses on butterfly conservation which provides an enjoyable and educational experience for all.
You can also take some time to check out maze that backs on to the hot house, or if mini golf is more your thing there is a Roman Ruins-themed course.
In between all this activity, take a break in the Tea Room Cafe for a cup of tea and a bite to eat.
Kingfisher River Cruises
Famous for its natural beautiful scenery, the river makes its way through the Symonds Yat gorge. The boat trips are approximately 40 minutes long, and commentary is provided throughout the trip. A great way to soak up some sun and learn about the region’s history.
These natural caves were mined for iron for over 4500 years. This makes Clearwell Caves some of Britain’s oldest underground mines.
Take the Deep Level or Semi Deep Level and scramble and squeeze your way through access shafts and tunnels. Remember not to wear your Sunday best for this trip!
Perrygrove Railway and Treetop Adventure
Kids of all ages will love a trip on this steam train through the Royal Forest of Dean. Hop on and hop off to look for the hidden treasure boxes, or to have a picnic at one of the outdoor tables.
Tintern Old Station
While the trains don’t run through here anymore, there is still plenty of fun here for the whole family! Pack a picnic basket to enjoy after taking a walk through the meadows and along the river. Afterwards, you can take a look at the art displayed in the Signal Box house – it is changed regularly.
